Prairie Rose School Division (PRSD) board trustees agreed to cover the costs for two people from the division to attend the Alberta School Councils Association (ASCA) conference in Edmonton.

At the March regular meeting, the board discussed fees and subsidizing of fees or memberships in the ASCA as well as conference attendance. Membership fees in the ASCA are $60 per school council.
At that meeting, trustees bantered around the idea of covering the costs for a certain number of people to attend the provincial conference from the division and covering those costs.
They agreed more research should be done before making a decision.
That feedback was brought back to the April 11 regular board meeting, but Superintendent Brian Andjelic said the summary of the data gathered is “all over the map.”
“I’m not sure how much clarity we got,” he added. “It rests with trustees to make a decision around any kind of action with this that I would say would be most meaningful.”
Trustee Arnold Frank said he believes there is no reason why individual school councils shouldn’t be able to cover the $60 ASCA membership fee each year.
“... I also believe some school councils and some parents would take full advantage of given the opportunity and it would be fully worthwhile for them to go to the annual conference,” he added.
He suggested the board cover the costs for up to two people to attend the annual conference, but that some kind of report be required about what was learned from their attendance.
Most of the other trustees agreed the individual school councils should cover their own membership costs and that it would be worthwhile for them to do so.
Frank made the motion for the board to allow for two people to attend the annual ASCA conference, with expenses paid as per division policy.
Trustees voted in favour and administration will work out the details and bring them back for the board’s information.
