Thanks to the lobbying of concerned parents, staff and board administration, Prairie Rose School Division will receive a one-time grant of $700,000 in September to help alleviate some funding concerns.

Prairie Rose was one of four divisions in the province hit particularly hard this year when the Alberta budget was released. Due to the a stabilization grant being phased out over the next two years, along with other funding cutbacks, division officials were looking at a funding shortfall of about $2.7 million for the next school year.

The one-time grant of $700,000 for the division the next school year will mean rather than having to cut up to 20 teaching positions in the division, that number could drop to around 12. It also puts the funding cutbacks more in line with other school divisions.

“We think it puts us more in the range of what other divisions are facing,” sayes Pat Cocks, secretary-treasurer for Prairie Rose.

She added division officials are grateful to the lobbying done by parents, staff members, and area MLAs.

The board will still have to make some tough decisions when it gets its first look at the draft budget for the next school year at a June 14 meeting. Final approval of the budget will take place at a special board meeting June 28.
