It will be a weekend of cruisin’ in Waterton Lakes National Park Aug. 27-28 as the summer season draws to a close in the busy national park.

The Waterton Shoreline Cruises Boat Parade will take place Aug. 27 starting at about 9 p.m.
Waterton Shoreline Cruises Co. will choose one of their boats to lead the parade. The boats taking part will be decorated with lights and parade from the marina, along the Waterton Lake shore to Cameron Bay and back, explains Maria Martinez, administrative co-ordinator with the Waterton Park Community Association.
Martinez would like those people who want to participate to register in advance. This can be done up to the day of the event.
“I would like to know the line-up so people can vote on their favourite boat,” she explains.
People who line up along the shoreline to watch the parade, will be able to vote for their favourites including most original, most likes and all-time favourite. The Martinez family has generously donated the prizes — items that will come in handy for boat owners.
Those who are spectators are encouraged to bring chairs, lights or glow sticks to help light the way for the boats.
This is the first year the Waterton Shoreline Cruises Co. and the Waterton Park Community Association have partnered to host the boat parade.
It is meant to be a fun event and to celebrate nearing the end of the busy summer season.
Martinez says people can hand in their votes at a table that will be set up at the marina, but there will also likely be some people on the shoreline trail to collect votes and encourage spectators to choose their favourites.
She sees the boat parade as a good opportunity to not only involve boat owners, but also just visitors to the park.
To register to take part in the boat parade, phone Maria Martinez at 403-859-2042 or email her at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
She reminds participants that because it is a national park, all boats have to undergo an inspection prior to being able to launch into the lake.
Also on display the last weekend in August will be vehicles that travel on land.
The annual Waterton Wheels Show and Shine is set for Aug. 28 in the park. This event has been sponsored by Pat’s Waterton since 2005.
There will be more than 150 vehicles on display for visitors to see. In the past they have included a 1930 Ford Pick-up, 1970 Chevelle SS, 1954 Meteor Skyline, 1912 IHC Auto Wagon and a “Jammer” Bus from the Prince of Wales Hotel.
There will also be hot rods, old trucks, new trucks and the popular muscle cars on display at the Waterton Community Centre.
Registration to show a vehicle or motorcycle starts at 9 a.m. at the ball diamond at the centre.
The registration fee is $10. More information is available by emailing: watertonwheels
