An agreement has been finalized with Medicine Hat College that will allow junior-high students from Parkside School in Redcliff, Redcliff Mennonite Alternative Program, Jenner School and Schuler School to take sessions in plumbing and carpentry at the college with a qualified instructor.

Reagan Weeks, assistant superintendent with Prairie Rose School Division, told the trustees more about the initiative at the June 14 meeting. Jenner students and Schuler students will get 20 sessions in the two disciplines in the coming school year, while Redcliff students will get 30 sessions.
“There is a $20,000 cost to the division for this opportunity,” said Weeks.
There was a bit of work needed to confirm the scheduling for all of the students, but officials at MHC appear to be excited about the opportunities, as are officials with PRSD and the schools.
“The kids are excited too,” added Weeks.
Trustees were pleased to hear students from these schools will be able to choose this as an option in the coming school year.
“What a fantastic opportunity for these kids who otherwise don’t get to participate in these things,” said Trustee Cathy Hogg.
New Hutterite Colony School
A new Hutterite colony school will open under Prairie Rose School Division (PRSD) in the coming school year.
At the June 14 regular board meeting, trustees heard that Elkwater Colony has grown to the point the colony has split. The new colony is now ready to be inhabited and is called Murray Lake.
The school board is responsible for naming new schools, but in this case sought input from colony officials about the name of the new school on the colony.
Based upon that feedback, trustees agreed to name the new school Hutterian Brethren Church School of Murray Lake. Students will begin classes in the new school in September. PRSD will receive an additional $11,541 in Colony funding from the provincial government with the new school.
