When Cypress-Medicine Hat Len Mitzel was left out of the Alberta cabinet and Medicine Hat MLA Rob Renner lost his Environment portfolio during the Oct. 12 cabinet shuffle, it meant the southeast part of the province didn’t have a representative at the cabinet table.

The six candidates vying to become the next premier of Alberta brought their ideas, and their individual supporters, to Medicine Hat Aug. 18, creating an exciting atmosphere for the standing-room only crowd.

An improved forecast for revenue, largely due to higher oil prices and near-record land sales, have lowered Alberta’s expected 2011-12 deficit to $1.3 billion, a decrease of 60 per cent from budget.
