Officials with Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park-Alberta hope to improve upon the existing trail system in the park around Elkwater.
A free trail building clinic will take place Oct. 1. It is put on by the International Mountain Bike Association.

“We have an awesome trail system, whether you’re biking or hiking,” says Chris Dodds, interpretive and education co-ordinator for Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park-Alberta.

On Oct. 1 participants will meet at the Learning Centre in Elkwater and learn from experts how to design, build and maintain trails in a sustainable way.

The training session takes place from 9 a.m. to noon. Trail building will follow from 1-4 p.m.

“I’ve been talking to people in the community and I think there will be a fairly good turnout,” says Dodds. “There is a lot of interest in developing and maintaining the trails we have.”

Oct. 2 will feature a special activity where crews from the day before, and the general public, can meet at the Learning Centre at 10 a.m. for a group bike ride. Dodds says it’s all about helping encourage children, young people and others to take up mountain biking as a regular activity.

Dodds is hopeful after the clinic is held, some participants will want to continue to help maintain and build trails in the Cypress Hills for all purposes, including mountain biking and hiking.

“We have all the gear to (do it), just not the bodies to use it,” he says about trail maintenance.

To register to take part in the clinic visit www.imbacanada.com and search under events for Elkwater. Individuals also can show up on that day even if they haven’t pre-registered.
