Swift Current hosts Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs 65th Annual Conference, April 16-18

The Swift Current Fire Department hosted 174 delegates in the city during the Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs 65th Annual Conference and Trade Show, which took place at the Credit Union iPlex from April 16 to 18. Over 120 vendors participated in the trade show that took place during the first two days of the event. The conference theme was situational awareness and the keynote speaker was Dr. Richard Gasaway from St. Paul, Minnesota, who also presented two plenary sessions on situational awareness. He served 33 years as a firefighter, paramedic and fire chief and he is considered to be a leading authority on first responder situational awareness and decision making. The other conference speakers were Comox Fire Chief Gord Schreiner, who also manages the Comox Fire Training Centre, and retired Prince Albert Fire Chief Les Karpluk, who spoke about leadership. The closing keynote address was delivered by Tyler Pelke, the assistant deputy fire chief with the Calgary Fire Department, who was set on fire after a vicious attack at the age of 14 , but he survived and has become an inspirational speaker on the power of forgiveness. Swift Current Fire Chief Denis Pilon and Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs President Trent Lee unveiled the new conference podium during the opening ceremonies on April 16.
