The inaugural “Evening of Spoken Word” was hosted by the Lyric Theatre on March 31 to celebrate the art of writing and the joy of sharing stories with others. In the run-up to the event a group of students from five Chinook School Division schools – Hazlet, Maverick, O.M. Irwin, Ponteix, and Swift Current Comprehensive High – participated in two workshops held at the Lyric Theatre by facilitators from the Saskatoon based community initiative Write Out Loud. Eight students volunteered to participate in the open mic event on March 31, where they shared their written pieces with the audience. The students were Phoebe Nodge, Devan Barber, Anthony Harder, Kirsten Samson, Carlos Munoz, Erika Erlandson, Olivia Orthner and Joe Boehm. The event was emceed by Saskatoon poet Isaac Bond, who also read a few of his poems during the evening, and the featured artist was Saskatoon poet, spoken word artist and playwright Shanda Stefanson.  She is a two-time member of the Saskatoon Slam Poetry team and a regular participant in the acclaimed Tonight it's Poetry spoken word performance series in Saskatoon. She urged students at the Lyric Theatre event to continue writing with passion and to focus on telling authentic stories.
