Write Out Loud at Lyric Theatre in Swift Current, March 18, 2015

Written by

Saskatchewan author Cassie Stocks, who lives in Eston, was the guest speaker at the Lyric Theatre's Write Out Loud event in Swift Current, March 18. She read from her debut novel Dance, Gladys, Dance and talked about her journey from being a single parent who worked full-time while writing to receiving the 2013 Leacock Canadian Humour Award for her first book. She became the first woman in 17 years to receive this prestigious literary prize. The Highfield Schoolhouse Band provided the music at the event, with band members Sandra Hill on piano, her husband Larry Hill on banjo, Sandra's brother Stewart Wells on fiddle and Don Hussey on saxophone and banjo. They performed a selection of prairie pop tunes from 100 years ago that used to be played at community gatherings held at schoolhouses across Saskatchewan. The next Write Out Loud event on April 15 will feature award-winning Regina author and prairie naturalist Trevor Herriot, who will be reading from his latest book The Road is How: A Prairie Pilgrimage through Nature, Desire and Soul.
