Centennial Light Up the Future celebration in Swift Current, Nov. 28, 2014

Cold temperatures did not dampen the enthusiasm of those attending the final centennial event in downtown Swift Current on Nov. 28. The purpose of the Centennial Light Up the Future celebration was to look ahead to the community's future with a focus on youth after the two previous events celebrated the city's past and present. The event coincided with the annual Christmas tree lighting on Market Square but included a number of additional activities. The Centennial Light Parade was hosted by the Swift Current Lions Club, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on Market Square with a group of dancing elves and there were also two reindeer. Other activities around Market Square included horse rides, a mocktail bar and ice sculpture across the street and entertainment by various local artists in the tent on the square. There were also a full line-up of entertainers at the Lyric Theatre along with a Christmas bake sale and a display of the seven trees decorated for the Festival of Trees, which raised funds for the Dr. Noble Irwin Health Care Foundation through a silent auction. People were still able to submit final bids on these beautifully decorated trees at the Lyric Theatre and the auction raised a total of $3,045 in support of health care. The winners of the Centennial Light Parade were the Swift Current Ag and Ex in first place, the Great Plains College in second spot and the Swift Current Elk and Royal Purple in third place.
