89th Annual Swift Current & District Music Festival Xtravaganza, May 4, 2018

The 89th annual Swift Current & District Music Festival concluded with a musical and awards program at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, May 4. The festival provides an opportunity for amateur musicians to perform and showcase their talent. The festival took place during March and April. The various categories of adjudication were strings and guitars, band and instrumental solos, piano, school music and speech arts, choral, voice and musical theatre. There were 278 solo participants and 964 participants in the school music and band categories. Three choral groups took part in the festival, involving about 60 people. The festival awarded over $6,000 in scholarships. Participants in the different categories were evaluated at adjudicated sessions and the festival concluded with the Xtravaganza, where award presentations were made to the category winners and a number of the winners performed to the audience. The following festival competitors received recommendations to participate in the finals for the provincial competition: Katherine Cacal (piano solo), Naomi Derksen (woodwind solo), Mandy Friesen (musical theatre) Anthony Merkel (brass solo), Jeremy Ponting (musical theatre), Dawnella Rude (musical theatre), Justine Sletten (vocal solo), Prairie Spirit Choir (choral), Meistersingers (choral), and Swift Current Comprehensive High School Chamber Singers (choral – national recommendation).
