A large crowd of about 250 people attended the 14th annual Field of Dreams sports dinner at the Legion Hall in Swift Current, Feb. 24. The event featured Toronto Blue Jays legends Jesse Barfield and Willie Upshaw, who played for the team during the 1980s. Right fielder Barfield recorded over 1,200 hits and 241 home runs during his 12- year Major League Baseball career. He received the Rawlings Gold Glove Award twice for his fielding performances. First baseman Upshaw made over 1,000 hits and recorded 123 home runs during his career. In 1983 he became the first Blue Jays player to reach 100 RBIs in a season. The two men participated in a question and answer session with emcee Ryan Switzer and also fielded questions from audience members. They spoke about the players they played with and against, their time as players in Canada, and they shared their views on today's game. A live and silent auction took place during the evening. The sports dinner is an important fundraiser for the Swift Current 57's baseball club. Field of Dreams Committee Chair Brad Woods said some of the funds from the event will be used to upgrade the batting cages and for other club expenses, for example uniforms for players.
