Family Literacy Day in Swift Current, Jan. 26, 2018

Written by

Activities to celebrate Family Literacy Day took place at the Swift Current Branch Library, Jan. 26. The event was hosted by the Southwest Literacy Committee in partnership with various organizations, including Chinook Regional Library, Chinook School Division, and Great Plains College. There were reading sessions throughout the day that were attended by Grade 3 students from three schools in Swift Current (Central, Fairview, and O.M. Irwin), as well as by parents and preschoolers. Local celebrity reader Teresa Cole engaged children with her lively readings of the graphic novel Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians by Jarrett Krosoczka. After each reading the children participated in a creative activity to sketch their own superhero character with the help of local graphic artist Morghie Flaterud. Children who attended this literacy event received a copy of the book that was used for the reading session and they were encouraged to read all 10 books in the Lunch Lady graphic novel series, which are available at the Swift Current Branch Library, to qualify to win a prize. The theme for this year's Family Literacy Day in Canada was “Libraries – the path to family literacy.”
