The Swift Current Curling Club hosted the 2018 SCT Players Championship as part of the provincial men’s curling tour, Jan. 5-7. The event provided an opportunity for the winning team to secure a berth to the 2018 SaskTel Tankard, which will take place in Estevan from Jan. 31 to Feb. 4. Team Casey of Regina’s Highland Curling Club remained undefeated during the weekend and won the championship game 6-5 against Steve Laycock of Saskatoon’s Nutana Curling Club. The winning team included two local players. Cabri’s Shaun Meachem skipped the team in the absence of Adam Casey while Swift Current’s Chris Haichert joined the team for the weekend to play second. Two teams from southwest Saskatchewan competed at the tournament. Team Deis from the Fox Valley Curling Club, skipped by Ryan Deis, was eliminated in the quarter final when they lost 6-4 to Estevan’s Brent Gedak. Team Deis started the tournament with two losses, but then won three games in the C event to reach the quarter finals. Team Chambers of the Swift Current Curling Club, skipped by Jeff Chambers, started the tournament with a 6-5 win against Saskatoon’s Michael Carss, but then lost 6-4 to Gedak. Chambers was able to win the next three games, but missed qualifying for the quarter finals when his team lost 6-5 against Saskatoon’s Dale Craig.
