Swift Current hosts the 2017 Mosquito AA Tier 1 provincial baseball championship, July 14-16, 2017

The 2017 Mosquito AA Tier 1 provincial championship took place in Swift Current, July 14-16. Seven teams competed for the provincial title. The Swift Current 57's played in pool B against teams from Lloydminster and Lumsden. On Friday the Swift Current 57's lost their first game 3-1 against the Lumsden Cubs, but won 11-5 against the Lloydminster Twins. All three teams had one win and one loss after their two pool games, and a tiebreaking formula was used to determine their ranking. The Swift Current 57's was ranked second behind the Lloydminster Twin. In the playoff round on Saturday the Swift Current 57's won 16-2 against the Battleford Beavers, but on Sunday the Swift Current team was eliminated in the semi-final game when they lost 11-10 to the Weyburn Element Beavers, who had finished first in pool A. The Weyburn team became provincial champions after winning the gold medal game 8-6 against the Muenster Red Sox. Baseball Saskatchewan representative Neil Hogg, throws the ceremonial first pitch during the opening ceremonies for the Mosquito AA Tier 1 provincial championship, July 14. An announcement was made during the opening ceremonies that a commemorative plaque in honour of the late Sharon Hogg will be installed at Sharon Hogg Field in recognition of her dedication and contribution to baseball in Swift Current and in the province. She passed away from cancer in December 2014.
