Poetry reading at City of Swift Current council meeting, April 24, 2017

Written by

Annie Lotochinski, a Grade 12 student at Swift Current Comprehensive High School, and local author Anthea Loran attended a regular City of Swift Current council meeting on April 24 for the 2017 Poetry City Challenge. Lotochinski read a poem titled Censorship to the meeting. Her poems have already been published in two poetry magazines and she won a first prize in the Polar Expressions Publishing 2015/16 student poetry contest. The 2017 Poetry City Challenge is an annual celebration of poetry facilitated by the League of Canadian Poets in association with participating mayors and city councils across the country. The challenge is a way to recognize UNESCO World Poetry Day on March 21 and celebrate National Poetry Month in April. Mayors are therefore encouraged to invite a local poet to read at a city council meeting during the month of March or April. Swift Current is one of six participating communities in Saskatchewan. The other communities are Creighton, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and Saskatoon.
