Diwali celebration in Swift Current, Oct. 30, 2016

The South Asian community in Swift Current hosted a Diwali celebration at the First United Church gymnasium, Oct. 30. Diwali or the Festival of Lights is an ancient Hindu festival to celebrate the victory of good over evil. People enjoyed a meal, which was catered by Husky Restaurant, and watched dancing performances by Tintu Sebastian, Turna Barua, Ankita Das and Pearl Munim. Thereafer audience members had an opportunity to participate in the celebrations by dancing the “Garba”,  a traditional folk dance from Gujarat, India. The event was sponsored by the Southwest Multicultural Association. Diwali has been celebrated for many years in Swift Current. It used to be a potluck for around 40 people, but it has become a catered event due to the growth in the number of people from South Asian countries who now reside in Swift Current.
