Write Out Loud starts 30th anniversary season, Sept. 21, 2016

Written by

Write Out Loud's 30th anniversary season started on a high note with an appearance by two internationally acclaimed authors Yann Martel and Alice Kuipers at the Lyric Theatre in Swift Current, Sept. 21. The couple, who lives in Saskatoon with their four young children, had a relaxed conversation with the audience about their careers as writers, their approach to writing, their current projects and the challenges of being writers and parents at the same time. Martel is best known for his international bestseller Life of Pi, which has sold more than 12 million copies and was made into an Academy Award winning movie. His latest novel, The High Mountains of Portugal, was published in February and appeared on the New York Times bestseller list a month later. Kuipers has received critical acclaim for her young adult novels and children's books. Her debut novel, Life on the Refrigerator Door, won several awards and was adapted for theatre in three countries. Her other works have also received numerous nominations and awards. The evening started with a musical performance by three local musicians, Eliza Doyle, Paula McGuigan and Dustin Olmsted. Write Out Loud is celebrating 30 years of author readings and literary cafes during the 2016-17 season. The next event on Oct. 19 will feature Lionel Hughes, the editor of Prairies North magazine, and on Nov. 16 there will be a 30th anniversary celebration.
