Demolition of former Oman school building in Swift Current, Aug. 29, 2016

Written by

The demolition of the former Oman School building on Swift Current’s south side started on Aug. 29. The structure was knocked down by an excavator within a few hours and work carried on the following day to clear the site of building rubble. The City of Swift Current acquired the school site for $1 from the Chinook School Division in 2015. The school became vacant after the consolidation of school facilities in the city due to the construction of the École Centennial School in the city’s new joint-use school facility. This piece of land was used as a site for a school since January 1914. John Oman, the head shepherd of the 76 Ranch, donated the land for educational purposes in 1913. The future use of the site must still be determined. The City’s infill guidelines require a public consultation process for any development proposals on the former school sites in Swift Current.
