Around 30 cyclists of all ages participated in the Swift Current Cycling Club's Big Ride along the Chinook Parkway on May 18. The club organized the bike ride in support of the Bell Let's Talk mental health initiative and six-time Olympian Clara Hughes' Big Ride for Mental Health, a 110-day bicycle journey covering 12,000 km through every province and territory. All proceeds from the Swift Current Big Ride will be donated to the local branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

 

The Saskatchewan Archaeological Society's ArchaeoCaravan started its summer tour to various locations around the province at the Swift Current Museum on May 15. Pictured are students from Maverick School who visited the mobile activity centre to learn more about archaeology in an interactive way through artifact identification, hide painting and separating and assembling porcelain pieces. A bike safety event took place at Bright Beginnings Family Centre in Swift Current on May 14 to teach young cyclists the necessary safety skills and behaviours that will reduce their risk of injury when cycling. The event took place during Bike Safety Week, May 12-18, and was hosted by the City of Swift Current, Cypress Health Region, Bright Beginnings Family Centre, Family Resource Centre, RCMP and the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute. The bike rodeo included helmet and bike inspections, safety awareness and fun cycling activities.

The Speedy Creek Racing Association season opener on the Mother's Day weekend saw racing action in four classes. The feature winners were Stuart Johnson (Thunder Trucks), Destiny Klym (Hobby Stocks), Mike Dionne (Street Stocks) and Bob Heffer (Modifieds). The next race day will be on May 23, when racing starts at 7 p.m. The event will be a breast cancer fundraiser with a silent auction of pink body panels from Terry Davidson's race car and there will also be a relay race around the track by 35 men who will be running on foot in pink speedos.
