Some disposal rates at the City of Swift Current’s east and west landfill sites will increase on Jan. 1.

Nations that were involved in the two world wars of the 20th century did not only send hundreds of thousands of soldiers to the different war fronts, but civilians who remained behind became part of the home front.

The annual city-wide food drive on Halloween night collected an estimated 9,775 pounds of food for the Salvation Army food bank in Swift Current.

The Chinook Regional Library is proposing a three per cent increase to its budget for 2018. The budget proposal was presented at a meeting of municipal delegates in Swift Current, Nov. 4.

Local students won a number of medals at a provincial debate competition hosted by the Swift Current Comprehensive High School (SCCHS) Business Club, Nov. 4.

Swift Current's Market Square has become an important fixture of the summer activities in the downtown area for the past seven seasons, and now it has been recognized with a provincial award.

United Way Gala comes through for Swift Current

The Swift Current United Way's 3rd annual Foundation of Hope Gala raised $75,000 in support of nine non-profit community programs.

A Swift Current area community organization that aims to engage the community on substance abuse issues has announced a name change and a competition to create a new logo for the group. The name of the Swift Current & District Drug Task Force has changed to Drug Strategy Action Committee. Chairperson Patti Dekowny said the name change took place in October.

Swift Current was one of six Canadian host cities for the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia series between regional league teams of Canadian national junior team candidates and the Russian national junior team. The second of two games featuring players from the Western Hockey League (WHL) took place at the Innovation Credit Union i-plex in Swift Current, Nov. 7. The WHL team had a convincing 7-0 win in the first game in Moose Jaw, Nov. 6. They looked set to repeat that performance in Swift Current with a 3-0 lead in the second period, but the Russians scored four unanswered goals to win the game. The next two games will take place in Ontario and the series will conclude with games in Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. Three members of the Swift Current Broncos team played in the series. Colby Sissons and Tyler Steenbergen skated for the WHL team and Artyom Minulin is a member of the Russian team. Shaunavon's Kole Lind of the Kelowna Rockets also played for the WHL team.

 

The Swift Current United Way's 3rd annual Foundation of Hope Gala raised $75,000 in support of nine non-profit community programs. The elegant evening of dining and dancing took place at the Living Sky Casino Event Centre, Nov. 4. Tickets to the event were sold out more than a month ago and 230 people attended the gala.The nine grant recipients were recognized during a presentation ceremony when they received benefactor awards. This year's gala raised awareness about domestic violence and the work done by Southwest Crisis Services to provide support to individuals dealing with abuse. Ang's Story, a video about the courage, resilience and survival of a woman in an abusive relationship, was launched at the gala. A variety of quality items were on offer at the silent auction and there was also a live auction with auctioneer Skip Neufeld.
