Often compared to Ryan Adams, Toronto-based alt-country singer/songwriter Justin Rutledge uses his love of literature to inspire well-crafted music that has received much critical acclaim.

This talented writer, singer, and instrumentalist will  perform at the Lyric Theatre Nov. 18, as part of the Blenders music series.
Rutledge grew up in a working-class community in Toronto, with aspirations of becoming a writer.
He studied English literature, with a major in modern poetry, for three years before dropping out to actively pursue his musical career. He worked as a bartender to pay for his first recording, which was released in 2004.
Since then, Rutledge has released four more recordings, one of which was longlisted for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize. With two Juno nominations under his belt, Rutledge continues to impress critics and audiences alike. He has toured Canada, the U.K., the United States, and Europe, and has performed with artists including Kathleen Edwards, Jim Cuddy, Blue Rodeo, Hawksley Workman, Luke Doucet, and Dolly Parton.
With influences ranging from Leonard Cohen and Hank Williams to Richard Brautigan and E.E. Cummings, it’s no surprise Rutledge’s music features outstanding lyricism. This unique and progressive songwriting is showcased perfectly by Rutledge’s sparse and effortlessly beautiful arrangements. His albums range in textures between electric and acoustic guitar, with both slow and fast-paced songs.
Rutledge’s live performances bring the same intimacy and honesty as his recordings, offering the audience a unique look into the soul of this literary and musical talent. With impressive critical acclaim and a fantastic discography behind him, Rutledge continues to please audiences around the world.
Justin Rutledge will perform at Swift Current’s Lyric Theatre Nov. 18, with doors opening at 7 p.m. and music beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at Pharmasave or by contacting Shann at 306-778-2686 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
