This year's Regina Folk Festival promises an excellent lineup of incredible performers from across the country – including Swift Current's very own bluegrass band, The Midnight Roses.

For those still looking for tickets, the organization is putting on a contest where music fans have the chance to win a Dream Weekend at the festival in Regina, valued at $1,300.

“We were really looking to welcome people from around the province to come to our festival,” explained Artistic Director with the Regina Folk Festival, Sandra Butel. “We are excited about it, and we've been voted best festival in Regina for the last ten years, so it might be time to invite rest of the province to experience it, as well.”

The Dream Weekend contest is open to any Saskatchewan resident aged 19 and over, and the winner will be announced on August 1 – just before the festival kicks off on August 9. The Great Regina Folk Festival Sound Escape prize package includes 2 Adult Full Weekend Passes to the festival (children 12 & under get in free), 3 nights accommodation at Ramada Plaza Regina (sponsored by the Regina Hotels Association), Food Concession Vouchers, Refreshment Tickets, and a CD package from musical artists at the festival.

“It really does give people a Dream Weekend at our festival, such a great prize,” Butel said. “It was important for us to be able to offer people the chance to have everything taken care of and just enjoy a weekend at our festival.”

The festival started in 1969, and has grown to an annual family-friendly music and creative festival with a community of up to 25,000 attendees of all ages, and 600+ volunteers. During the day, patrons can enjoy music at any of the four stages, workshops, an artist's market, food court, and children's activities – all free of charge. The only area that requires a ticket to enter is the mainstage.

“There really is a big variety of stuff for people to discover, and that's part of what makes this festival so special,” noted Butel. “You're not only experiencing great music, but you are discovering downtown Regina. People tend to come out because they really like one artist who is performing, but then they get the experience of the whole festival, that wonderful energy, and people really end up committed to the festival experience afterward.”

This year's festival features an impressive lineup of performers including Feist, Neko Case, Loreena McKennitt, Hayden, Rosanne Cash, Charles Bradley, and Bahamas. The festival will also feature a number of Saskatchewan performers, including The Midnight Roses.

“I just love what The Midnight Roses are doing, I love their energy, and I think they are representing your town very well,” Butel explained. “I always book local artists with the idea that they will fit in at same calibre as the more well-known artists there, so it's a pleasant surprise when people discover that they are from right here in Saskatchewan. It's so important that we give this opportunity to our local Saskatchewan artists to show them some appreciation for what they have accomplished, and offer them a great opportunity for professional development. It's a valuable part of building our province.”
