Americana roots group Steel Wheels will be stopping in Swift Current to perform at the Lyric Theatre on April 5, as part of the Blenders music series. This dynamic four-piece string band focuses on a more 'stripped down' kind of sound, featuring acoustic instruments and vocal harmonies.

“We're not really latched onto just being bluegrass or old-time music, even though that's what our instrumentation lends itself to being called,” explained frontman Trent Wagler. “We do a lot of old country and old blues, with touches of Cajun and Irish influences. It's really the root of American music in a lot of ways.”

Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the group was formed when Wagler began looking to his friends to help him put together a band to play some of the songs he had been writing. Their desire to collaborate on the songs led them to where they are today.

“I think we've all played other styles of music over the years, in rock bands and jam-style bands, but at some stage, I was really drawn to simple music, inspired by old gospel harmonies,” Wagler admitted. “I loved the idea that a person could just sit across from me at a table and just play a song with some strings and a voice. The simplicity and universality of just a song, without huge amps and the spectacle around it, really drew me in.”

In a day where, if you have the right equipment, you can create any sound you want onstage, The Steel Wheels enjoy the forced limitations of working with what their instruments can do. Wagler noted that this style of performance is an 'invited challenge' for the band.

“When we are playing live, it's all about communication between us as a unit, and us and the audience,” he said. “It's really two-fold. We are sharing songs we've maybe played a hundred times, but it's new every night – always a fresh experience. And we are seeing and hearing new things every night onstage, too, improving every night. You always find ways to get tighter, to work more closely. It's really exciting to build on that, and that's the real joy of playing live.”
