Local musicians are up for Saskatchewan Country Music Awards this year, with eight artists and bands from the southwest nominated in eleven different categories. Founder of the SCMA's Southwest Chapter, Glenna Switzer, is thrilled to see the members of the group seeing the recognition they deserve.

“I am absolutely thrilled about this,” she said. “Before we built the chapter, lots of people in the province didn't know about the talented musicians that we have here in the southwest. Now, they are starting to get their names out there, and we are seeing our members on the list of nominees.”

Although most of the members of the Southwest Chapter of the Saskatchewan Country Music Association have been involved with music for many years, the chapter was formed only three years ago.

“Back in the day, there were four or five of us bands, and people who played occasionally at churches, but there weren't a lot of opportunities out there,” admitted Switzer. “Now, between our own tour shows and local open mic night at the Lyric, there are more chances for these talented people to get out there to play and sing.”

While there are plenty of opportunities available, it is also important for local artists to work together to take advantage of as many of these opportunities as possible. It has allowed musicians in the southwest to benefit from the talents of other artists in the area.

“I always preach about our camaraderie,” Switzer explained. “If someone is doing some recording, they can call me and I'll come out and put down some piano tracks on the album. Before, if I wanted to make a CD and I needed a guitar player, I'd have to find people I might not know well. Now, we are all working together and helping each other.”

Switzer is pleased to see this hard work recognized with the SCMA nominations.

“I’m very proud of all of them, I really feel like I did something good in the world,” she added. “It’s very rewarding. Of course, they are very talented, but these people in the southwest have put hours and hours into it. They work really hard. That’s one of the things that’s so important to me.”
