Lyric Theatre Christmas Matinee, Dec. 16-17, 2017

Families enjoyed a fun time at the Lyric Theatre’s annual Christmas Matinee, Dec. 16 and 17. Each afternoon’s program included a puppet show, storytelling, Christmas carols, craft making and an opportunity to meet Santa. The event continues a tradition that started many decades ago at Swift Current’s historic theatre, when a Christmas movie was shown to children.

The Swift Current Broncos finished the first half of the season on a high note with a 3-1 win over the visiting Kamloops Blazers at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex, Dec. 16. The Blazers outshot the Broncos in each period and made a total of 41 shots to goal during the game against 28 by the Broncos. The home team was ahead 2-1 at the end of the first period, but defended that narrow lead for two periods with the help of some big saves by goalkeeper Logan Flodell. Matteo Gennaro scored on the Blazer's empty net in the final minutes of the game with a shot across the length of the ice. This was the fifth consecutive victory for the Broncos before their Christmas break and the team is second in the East Division standings with a 25-7-2-0 record. The Broncos will play their next home game on Dec. 27 against the Moose Jaw Warriors, the team currently in the top spot of the East Division. Also pictured, the École Centennial School students entertained the crowd with Christmas carols after the second period.
