Swift Current's Lyric Theatre is set to host their 4th Annual High Tea at the Lyric, on May 11. The event will feature music, monologues, and martinis – all of the elegance of a high tea, but with a bit of a fun twist.

“A few of us on the board had been to high tea at Victoria's Empress Hotel, and it's such a special event, we thought we needed something like that in Swift Current,” explained organizer Gwen Uher with the Lyric Theatre. “I have gone before with my mom, my sister, and my daughter, and it was such a special occasion, and a wonderful way to celebrate some of the women in your life.”

Each year, the high tea features a fantastic lineup of entertainment, and this year is no different. As guests arrive, local pianist Chloe Golden will be performing at the theatre. Ballerinas from Swift Current's Backstage Dance Company will demonstrate some of their techniques, and writer Bonnie Dunlop and friends will be presenting some monologues about being a woman. The event will finish off after some musical entertainment provided by Jacqueline Hudec and her band, Pil Country.

“It's kind of a mixture of all kinds of things, which people really seem to enjoy,” explained Uher. “The food is also always outstanding, so it makes for a very nice way to spend the afternoon with your mom, girlfriends, or families.”

Another special touch at the event is the fine china carefully set at each table. The china is brought in by over 20 hostesses, who do a beautiful job of preparing the venue for the event.

“This is china that has been passed down to these women by their mothers, or their grandmothers, and it all has a story behind it,” Uher added. “Most of them don't have the chance to use this fine china very often, so that really helps make this event special in that way, as well.”

Tickets for the event are already selling fast, and Uher noted that the theatre has been receiving calls to reserve tables since February. Last year's event brought in their largest crowd ever, sold out at 150 people.

“People in Swift Current have special memories of the Lyric, and we are always trying to help them build more,” said Uher. “This is now the 4th year for some of the ladies who have been attending this event, and it's a very special time for them.”

Thanks to event sponsors Blue Sky Lingerie and CKSW, the tea will be a fundraiser to help the theatre continue to renovate the facility, and provide the ongoing programming offered at the Lyric. It's also a great way to support local artists.

“These little ballerinas, some of them might get to the point where they want to start performing onstage by themselves,” Uher explained. “This is a great chance for them to practice their stuff, and share their talents with an audience. It's so important that we continue to provide a venue for these skilled performers in our community.”

Tickets for the event are only $25, and are available by calling the theatre at 306-773-6292 or at Blue Sky Lingerie.
