The Lyric Theatre is offering a great excuse to pull out the vintage 1950s gear with their 50s Showcase event, coming up on April 19 and 20. This event, sponsored by MNP, will feature gourmet burgers, live entertainment, dance lessons, trivia games, and costume prizes.

“This is going to be a really spectacular event,” explained organizer Eliza Doyle. “We are really encouraging people to come dressed in their 50s apparel, because we will have a number of prizes to give out for best solo, duo, or group costumes.”

Dance instructors from Toon Town Dancers will be available for demonstrations and lesson, and the music for the evening will offer a soundtrack straight out of the 1950s. The band, The Rockin' 58s, will feature several local musicians, and the opening act is Asian Hipster Diva – a group of local high school students.

“We are trying to promote a great night of fun, interactive dancing and entertainment to honor that amazing era,” Doyle said. “We will have old cars parked outside to add to the atmosphere, and we'll have a shoe-shine station inside the theatre. We put out a call online looking for people to lend their paraphernalia, so we are looking for old comics, records, old signs – anything we can get.”

Instead of offering a one night only event, the committee decided to present the showcase over the weekend to keep the dance floor from being too crowded. They are anticipating to sell out both nights.

“A lot of people think we are just putting on an event, but everything we do is to fundraise to keep the renovations going on this facility,” explained Doyle. “We did get a big grant, but that money will basically just go towards getting the second floor cleaned up, and fixing the roof. We are always looking for donations and trying to raise money, because we do have a long way to go. I think people forget about that.”

Since most of the showcase events at the theatre feature dining experiences, Doyle wanted to offer something a bit different that focuses more on dancing and the spirit of music. Through the sponsorship of MNP and the support of the community, she is confident that the event will be well-received.

“Without that kind of support, we wouldn't be able to make any money on events like this, and we need to be able to pay our musicians and dancers well to help support them, too,” Doyle said. “We will be around town in our 50s clothes, selling tickets for the event and getting people excited about it, so look for us and help this event sell out.”

Tickets for the event are only $45, and includes a delicious dinner with gourmet burgers (Cheeseburger with charred green chiles and onions, Andouille and Beef Burger with Spicy Mayo and Caramelized Onions, and a Triple Smoke Burger), a delicious cheeseball with home made crackers, and root beer floats. Doors open at 6:30, and dinner begins at 7:00pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Lyric Theatre at 306-773-6292.
