Construction at Lyric Theare gets underway this week

With construction beginning again at the Lyric Theatre this week, Southwest Cultural Development Group is looking forward to the next phase of the facility’s renovation plan.


President Gwen Uher explained getting to this point has been a long process.
“The first thing that the board wanted to do was make sure that the building was structurally sound, so we’ve had a structural engineer in to examine the facility,” Uher noted. “We also had a historical architect visit, to identify the elements of the building that are important in terms of its historical integrity.”
Frontier Construction began demolishing the interior walls and ceilings of the second floor in September of 2012, which allowed the engineer access to examine the supports for the roof and skylights. While SCDG was pleased to see how little water damage there was, the supports for the skylights need to be reinforced and the damage needed to be dealt with to bring the building up to code.
“Frontier Construction will be back to work right away, making all of these modifications and improvements,” added Uher. “From there, new skylights will be installed and the roof will be fixed. We are anticipating that work should take between four to six weeks.”
The committee has been working closely with the architectural firm P3A in Regina, to develop a conceptual plan for the basement, main floor, and second floor of the Lyric.
“We want to make sure that we have a plan that addresses the needs of the Lyric today, but also our needs in the future,” Uher explained. “This should ensure that as we move forward with the different phases of the renovations, we have a clear plan to follow.”
SCDG will look at its funding situation after this phase of construction to see what the next phase will involve. Depending on how much funding is available, they will make a list of priorities to work in certain important projects — including the installation of the elevator for which the group recently received a $25,000 grant.
“We don’t have access to that money until we start working on the elevator, but it will cost us more than the grant can cover,” said Uher. “We will have to see where that falls in, but it is so important to us to get that elevator. This is such a huge project that even though we do have about $1 million to work with, that will really only get us to a certain stage, and there are still so many more things that need to be addressed. Until we get more money, we will be at a standstill.”
To continue raising funds for the renovations, the Lyric will host several events throughout the spring. In addition to the Valentine’s Day events, the group is planning a 1950s party for April, and in May, will host a special Taste It! event featuring wines from Orofino Wines.
“We are hoping that people will realize that there is a need, and they will continue to give so generously and support our events,” Uher noted. “We are always looking for grants to help us out, and trying to come up with other ways to collect more funds. This is definitely a work in progress.”
