This year’s Blenders lineup proves to be the best yet, as the popular local music series kicks off on Sept. 22 with a concert from Mighty Popo Trio. This 2007 Canadian Folk Music Award winner and Rwandan-Burundian refugee / survivor plays music steeped in African tradition, with a smooth twist of blues, jazz, rock, and R&B.

“People like to call it world music for lack of better word, but I just like to call it Canadian music,” explained Jacques Murigande with Mighty Popo. “It was made here, but it’s influenced by many other cultures. Inspiration has come from all around – situations I’ve been in, music I was listening to. I was surrounded by African music and European music equally, so that’s a big influence for me.”
Murigande began focusing on a career in music as young as ten years old, when he first decided he wanted to be an artist. Instead of studying for a diploma or going to work, he got to work learning the things he needed to pursue his passion.
“It’s just a calling, and I responded to that calling,” he said. “I grew up in a neighborhood where people just loved music, there were guitars around all the time. That could be an explanation, but really, it was just a calling from somewhere.”
For Murigande, one of the most gratifying parts of the job is connecting with his audience, and sharing the experience with them. He likes seeing people enjoying themselves at his shows.
“I’m there for the people who want to share with me, because I don’t really play to prove anything,” admitted Murigande. “I just want to share, and I think they respond to that. If there is even just one person who responds, I’m happy. And people keep coming, so I must be doing something right.”
He is certainly keeping himself happy. Murigande loves being able to earn a living doing what he loves.
“It’s a blessing for me, being a musician,” he said. “Music is everything for me. It’s life, a celebration, and we celebrate life. Each performance is a celebration, where the audience can see and hear music that they might not be familiar with, but at the same time, it’s theirs. It’s an acoustic, intimate setup, but I always want people to get up and dance.”
The Mighty Popo Trio will be performing at the Lyric Theatre on Sept 22. Doors open at 8pm, with music starting at 9pm. Tickets are only $35, and are available by contacting Shann Gowan at 306-778-2686 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
