Two-time Juno nominee Maria Dunn is bringing her lyrically-rich folk tunes to the Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Dunn’s music is traditional folk mixed with Celtic, bluegrass and country roots melodies.
In the spirit of folk greats Woody Guthrie and Buffy Sainte-Marie, Dunn’s songs weave together stories about the struggles and joys of being human.
Classically trained in piano as a child, Dunn spent 13 years as a volunteer DJ in a campus/community radio station where she was immersed in the sounds of folk and roots songwriters, singers and instrumentalists. She began penning her own music in the mid-90s, often focusing on issues of social justice, community, and the resilience and grace of ordinary people.
Dunn has released six albums, including her most recent effort, Gathering, which was nominated for a Juno, won the Edmonton Music Prize and was named one of CKUA Radio’s Essential Albums of 2016.
Her previous independent albums include: Piece By Piece (Nominee - 2013 Canadian Folk Music Award), The Peddler (Nominee - 2009 CFMA), 2004’s We Were Good People, For A Song (Nominee - 2002 Juno Award), and From Where I Stand (Nominee - 1999 Prairie Music Award).
Now based in Edmonton, Dunn was born in Scotland. The sounds of her birthplace are often reflected in her powerful songs, while others contain influences from Africa, Asia and Canada’s First Nations.
Dunn will be joined on-stage at the Empress by fiddler Shannon Johnson and multi-instrumentalist Jeremiah McDade, both from the Juno Award-winning band, The McDades.
Tickets for Maria Dunn, the fifth concert of the Empress’ 2017 – 2018 Centre Stage series, are $37.50 each and available at, by calling 403-553-4404 (toll-free at: 1-800-540-9229), or at the Box Office on Main Street.
