I want to choose both joy and freedom — an experiment for living the best life possible

What would you say if you were asked the following question, “Would you like to experience more joy or freedom in your life?”
I imagine that you would say, “Yes, of course I’d like more joy and freedom.”

Who would say “no” to more joy and freedom? The question is not a judgment of your level of joy or freedom. The question is simply an invitation to experience and expand the joy and freedom in your life even more.
I asked that very question a few weeks ago when I was in Saskatoon at a Body, Mind and Spirit Expo. I was one of the participants/vendors at this national event, along with my friend and colleague Doug Howorko. Together, we are “The Joy Freedom Experiment” — a new adventure that Doug (The Freedom Master) and I (The Joy Guru) are creating together. The Joy Freedom Experiment was there to celebrate, invite and create “joy and freedom” for all the expo guests.
Our booth was a “science lab for creating a joy filled and freedom bound life.” The key experiment was to see if people would “play with us” and pull a card from our “Joy Freedom Experiment Game.” More than 100 cards with different questions, wonderings and invitations were placed in a large crystal bowl. Every card was intentionally connected to joy and freedom. So with crystal bowl in hand, I offered “joy” to all who passed by and waited to see their response. “Would you like to experience more joy?” I would ask. “Would you like to pull a card and see what joy filled magic can show up for you today?”
With hesitation many people put their hand in the crystal bowl and pulled a card.
“Worst case scenario,” I said, “you pull a card and walk away. Best case scenario, you pull a card and it changes your life.” (How’s that for an introduction).
We had a line up at our booth. People were intrigued and wondered what the laughter, fun and smiles were all about. Before too long the “Joy Freedom Experiment Game Cards” were pulled. People would share their cards, answer the questions, or do the responses the cards invited of them. One by one as cards were pulled, our collective stories would emerge. People would sing songs that reminded them of joy. People would be invited to give their neighbour a compliment. One woman burst into tears of surprise as she pulled a card that her daughter had asked her at home that very morning: “If you felt completely free, what would you do differently today.”
There was a deep story in her — a deep memory, a yearning perhaps of freedom and joy in her life. When we give ourselves permission to play we are invited into the magic of our lives.
I am reminded of Marianne Williamson’s wise words: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be?”
I saw these words manifest over the weekend. I saw people’s light, power, confidence and greatness emerge as they pulled a card and played with us. The invitation to play was contagious. When we shine our light it creates an opportunity for joy to expand for everyone in our midst. What else is possible?
What if playing, stepping out of our comfort zone, and letting our light shine were the pathways to being ourselves and feeling free? Not everyone says “yes” to joy. Not everyone played our game — which is totally coolio. However I know this to be true: all of us can choose joy and when we do, our light shines and our brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous life shows up and expands even more.
My invitation: play. Step out of your comfort zone. Ask yourself this question: What can I choose that can create even more joy in my day?
Shine on. Play on. Joy on.
