It all started with a little yellow love note

Prelude: The weekend was a full multi-tasking weekend. From midnight zumba dancing and road trips to late night visioning, planning and business dreaming. I finished the weekend full, spinning and tired.


Monday: My “to-do” lists and plans for the day wake me up.
Never a good sign. A full weekend, merges into a full week. I head to a local school for a planning meeting.
Two hours later I return to my car and find a yellow ticket on my windshield. “What???”
I sigh and think I have a parking ticket. “Aaaarggghh”.
I look closer and take the ticket in my hands. It is a note. It is beautiful. The timing was perfect.
The little yellow note read: “Thank you for being such a bright ray of sunshine!! I admire how you connect with people and how you bring such positive energy to those you meet.
Saw your car here and thought maybe this little note may bring sunshine back to you! One of your many fans!!
I look around – as if I would see the “note-writer” hiding around a corner or smiling behind a tree. No one appears. I get in my car. Read the note again. Several times in fact.
The timing was indeed perfect.
I want to say “thank you” to the mystery note-writer for helping me to know, see and feel, that my work and my life does make a difference. We all want to feel appreciated and valued. We all want to feel loved. This mystery note helped me to remember that I am loved, valued and appreciated just as I am. Thank you.
This was a great “pay it forward” moment. That little yellow note switched my mind from “to-do” lists and tasks, to “possibilities” and dreams. I started to look for the miracles in the day.
Wednesday: I am sitting in meditation at Yoga Connexion with guest teacher and guide Swami Kenananda.
Following our silent meditation practice, Swami Kena speaks about mindfulness, oneness and karma yoga. He invites us to practice karma yoga as a means to give without expectation to receive. Karma yoga is the discipline of selfless action and is said to be the most authentic ways to progress in the spiritual life. Karma yoga is often understood as yoga of selfless (altruistic) service.
I am reminded of the little yellow note and how this gift was in many ways a selfless act – without expectation of reward or recognition, but simply an act of kindness and a sharing from the heart.
What would it take to practice Karma Yoga in your daily life? What would it take to give of yourself to another without expectation of reward or recognition?
Many wise ones have spoken about such actions.
Have you heard these great teachings: “Be the change you want to see in the world” (Gandhi). “Be kind, for whenever kindness becomes part of something, it beautifies it. Whenever it is taken from something, it leaves it tarnished (Prophet Muhammad). If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion (Dalai Lama).  “You must love your neighbor as yourself” (Jesus).
Life is about practicing compassion. We need to let go of who was right/wrong/winning/losing. We have to be open to giving kindness and compassion without reward.
How awesome would that be?

Maya Angelou - a great poet, educator and activist said: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
All it takes is one moment. All it takes is one little yellow note. Are you ready?
My invitation: Everyday and in all ways, strive to make people feel good. Whether they be your friends, neighbors or strangers. Watch what your good can do in the world. I do not know who wrote that little yellow note, but I will never forget how it made me feel. Together we can create our own “Yellow Note Flash Mob”.
Imagine all week long people finding little yellow notes of kindness; on their cars, office desks, kitchen tables, mailboxes, stuck to their bathroom mirrors.
The possibilities are endless. Let’s do this my friends.
