Local country music singer Catherine Lewans will get a chance to perform in a familiar part of the world in a few weeks.

The native of Shaunavon will perform at Living Sky Casino in Swift Current Nov. 18 at 9 p.m., and Nov. 19 at 10 p.m. She will also be at the Abbey Community Hall for a special Remembrance Day performance starting at 8 p.m.

As the 2011 Saskatchewan Country Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year, Lewans has been busy with a new recording project for 2012 and a steady touring schedule.

In December of 2009, Lewans jumped onto the music scene with the release of her debut album, ‘Kickin’ Up Dust’, which was inspired by her experiences growing up on a farm near Shaunavon, and the heart-breaking loss of a friend who passed away suddenly.

“My love for music, however, began at the age of about four, when I started playing piano and picking out harmonies as music played on the radio,” Lewans explained. “I started writing orchestral / piano music around the age of 11, and my compositions have transformed into what you hear now on my album and in my live performances.”

Since then, Lewans has involved herself with other professionals in the industry, including musicians and organizations such as the Saskatchewan Country Music Association. Her involvement has led to many networking opportunities, such as writing with incredible Canadian and Nashville-based writers for her upcoming release.

“As plans are finalized and arrangements are made for my next album, my fans can expect to be taken on a bit more edgy, metaphorical and imaginative ride, and I’m looking forward to sharing some new music and stories with them,” Lewans said. “My next project will have a modern, but true country feel and sound, with maybe even a touch of bluegrass.”

Her music has certainly developed since her first forays into musical composition as a child, and most people would compare Lewans’ recent music to artists including Miranda Lambert, Terri Clark and Jo Dee Messina.

Her music is mainly inspired by her faith, as well as the relationships she’s formed with the people around her. Lewans’ other influences include life experiences, memories of her childhood, dreams she’s had, and her desire to make a positive change in the world.

“Making music has always been something that comes very naturally to me,” she added. “The way I best express myself is through music — when you love something, it’s easy to want to pursue it, almost automatically. We are all given different gifts to share and I find joy in sharing my musical gifts.”

Lewans loves being able to create something that no one else has ever written or heard, and share it with an audience. She is especially moved when she has the opportunity to talk with her fans, to see how her music has affected them.

“I am so encouraged and humbled when a fan tells me that my song meant something to them, or if I see someone cry as they listen because they’re filled with emotion, or when they dance because they’re happy,” she noted. “The best part about being an artist is being blessed with the privilege of sharing my music, and the fact that it could have an effect on someone’s life.”

With each show she plays, Lewans feels she is developing further as both an artist and as a person, and learning new things about herself along the way. The feeling she gets when she’s performing live keeps her excited and full of anticipation for the next show.

“It’s so difficult to describe. It’s almost like going into a dream and you wake up when the song is over,” she said. “I become full of energy and passionate about the words and the notes that are happening. I have so much fun when I’m playing live — that’s the best part!”
