The city will be hopping Saturdays with the opening of the new Market Square.

“We’re very excited that the Market Square is underway,” said Susan Motkaluk, chief administrative officer for the City.

“Literally, our effort here is to bring people downtown, and we’ll have a variety of things for people to experience and enjoy: vendors, food items, hand-made products, and professional, and amateur entertainment.  My favourite is the face painting and buskers, because I have two young kids that I know would be excited to be a part of all that.”

The square next to the Bank of Montreal, located at the corner of Central Ave. and Chaplin Street, will be alive with music and vendors each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18 to Sept. 24.

Amateur and professional musicians will provide entertainment every two hours, while vendors can sell their wares.

Musical acts will receive prize money for best in category at the end of the season.

“This is a competition, so we’d love to see entertainers come out and compete for best in category,” said Motkaluk.

Admission is free for the visiting public to attend. Vendors can purchase their spots for $20. Motkaluk said residents and visitors can come take in the sights and sounds of the new Market Square.

“If it really takes off we want to see as may people as we can downtown, and if we get the uptake that we’re hopeful we will then we’d like to see the market grow and expand all the way to Memorial Park,” said Motkaluk.
