Fort Macleod
Genuine acoustic bluegrass performed by Nova Scotia’s famed Spinney Brothers opens the Empress Theatre’s popular 2011-2012 Centre Stage Series this fall.
The Spinney Brothers fresh and traditional bluegrass will be performed by brothers and group founders Allan Spinney on guitar and vocals, and Rick Spinney on banjo and vocals on Oct. 27 and 28 at 8 p.m in Fort Macleod. Alongside is Gary Dalrymple on mandolin, fiddle and vocals and Terry Mumford on bass and vocals.

Nova Scotia has a long-standing history of enjoying and producing traditional bluegrass music dating

back to the 1950s when a Kentville radio station popularized the music of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. The Spinney Brothers have maintained the tradition and popularity of bluegrass music in Nova Scotia and throughout Canada since 1992 when brothers Rick and Allan debuted their band with “a tight brother duet vocal style that was immediately recognized for its energetic and distinctive sound.”

Spinney Brothers are noted for their unique bluegrass sound, with a heavy banjo, mandolin and southern fiddle style that have brought them multiple awards and a huge fan base nation wide.

They have toured from coast to coast and south of the border from Maine to California. In 2012, hard-core bluegrass and Spinney Brothers fans will cruise the Florida Keys and Mexico with this heavily-awarded group.

Spinney Brothers were inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010 and were the 2009 and 2010 Eastern Canadian Bluegrass Music Awards (ECBMA) Vocal Group of the Year.

Spinney Brothers toured across Canada in 2010 on the strength of their most recent CD Side by Side. With eight other albums under their belt including Golden Leaves Begin to Fall and The Spinney Brothers Going Home their tight duet singing is considered to represent the best found in bluegrass today.

“The Spinney Brothers is a band that adheres to the traditional roots of bluegrass. They go to the very core. I have seen them entertain crowds in the United States and Canada and they are true professionals in every sense of the word,” says Milton Harkley, Bluegrass Showdown Inc. Asherville, North Carolina.

Spinney Brothers is the first performing group within a series of six Centre Stage Series concerts at the Empress Theatre in 2011 and 2012.
