There was a large turnout on a beautiful sunny day for Innovation Credit Union's 37th annual Picnic in the Park at Riverside Park in Swift Current, June 3. Families enjoyed a relaxing afternoon in the park while taking in the many activities available to young and old, including stage entertainment, children's games, different displays and booths with food and refreshments.


The Dance Studio in Swift Current reached a milestone when the 10th annual A Touch of Class recital took place at the Living Sky Casino event centre, June 2. Students showcased their talents and new skills after a season of hard work during a matinee and evening performance. The dancers presented a full program of 27 choreographed dances in different styles, including some revamped dances from the past nine years, to celebrate the art of dance and the technical competence of students. Perfect attendance and student awards were announced at the end of the recital. Studio owner and artistic director Melissa Wallace presented the student awards to Aleah Burton (most improved confidence), Alex Carleton (passion for dance), Kennedi Johnston (fabulous attitude), and Anna Oman (enthusiasm award).


The arts team at École Centennial School used a combination of drama, music, dance and art to showcase the artistic talents of students through the production of the play Collage of the Arts. There was an afternoon and evening performance of the play on May 31 in combination with the school's 2nd annual art show, which displayed art pieces created by kindergarten to Grade 8 students. The play consisted of a series of skits. After each dramatic sketch there was either a dance performance or a musical interlude.


The opening day for the Western Major Baseball League's 2018 season was on May 31. The Swift Current 57's started the defence of their 2017 championship title with a home game against the Weyburn Beavers. The home team took to the field in new bright orange outfits and with only one returning player from last year, pitcher Mitch Guiberson. Weyburn won the game 4-3 after Keaton Greenwalt singled in the eight innings on a hit by Eric Morales. Dauson Tate made two hits and scored a run for Swift Current. The other singles were scored by Anthony Stewart and Alex Orenczuk. The Swift Current 57's used four pitchers during the game and Tommy Steier took the loss. 

The second annual truth and reconciliation event in Swift Current will focus on the need for families to heal from the trauma of the past.

The City of Swift Current will go ahead with an unplanned project in the 2018 capital budget to make use of an opportunity to pave the access and other roads at the Swift Current Airport.

More residential lots will become available in the Saskatchewan Valley residential subdivision after the completion of grading and deep utilities work.

Delegates from the provinces and territories had their first opportunity to have a look at the city where the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG) will take place.

The presenting sponsors of the Foundation of Hope gala will continue their partnership with the Swift Current United Way for 2018.

All That Jazz concert, May 26, 2018

The Swift Current Comprehensive High School (SCCHS) Music Department hosted an evening of musical entertainment to raise funds for the band program. The 2018 All That Jazz performance took place in the SCCHS cafetorium, May 26. There were free swing dance lessons before the formal program. The school’s junior and senior jazz bands as well as the vocal jazz choral group delivered a variety of jazz favourites. As an added bonus the program included a performance by the Swift Current Jazz Orchestra, a community-based non-profit jazz ensemble.
