How much would you be willing to risk to make your dreams come true? Keith Lynch was willing to risk his safety and his career. Doing so required a spirit of adventure.

Some of you may remember Keith. He was featured in this column last fall. Keith’s dream was to canoe 4,000 miles from Montana to Dallas, Texas on several great rivers including the Mississippi. His employer wasn’t willing to grant him a leave, so Keith quit a 20-year career in finance and funded the trip entirely without sponsorship.
A year before he embarked on his epic journey, Keith was deeply touched by the loss and sickness of people who were near and dear to his heart. Sensing that life is fragile and brief, Keith understood that there was no better time to make his dream come true.
Beyond a three-day excursion, Keith had no previous canoeing experience.
Undaunted, Keith began his trip only to capsize during the first week and in the process lost almost $3,000 of electronic equipment.
A few months later, he was robbed and in Oklahoma, a sheriff mistook him for a drug runner and confiscated his gear.
However, when Keith arrived at his destination and was asked to reflect on his experience, he made no mention of the difficulties.
Instead, he said, “I’ve definitely changed. I think I’ve always been a generous person, or I’ve tried to be a generous person. I think I’ll continue to do that and hopefully I can reach out more and help people.”
Keith has helped others by being an inspiration to people who aren’t sure they have the courage to pursue their dreams. Adventurers like Keith push themselves beyond their limits and encourage us to do the same.
Now Keith needs your help. He’s been nominated for Canoe and Kayak Magazine’s Spirit of Adventure Award. This prestigious honour is given annually to the “person or group who best embodies the spirit of adventure in paddling.”
Keith is clearly qualified and deserves to win.
You must hurry. Voting ends July 21. The process is simple. Just follow this link (http://www.canoe kayak.com/canoe-kayak-awards/vote/spirit-of-adventure/) or Google search Canoe and Kayak Awards 2015. Help Keith win the recognition he deserves.
