February is Heart Month, and an event is planned to kick off the month-long focus on the fight against the disease that claims a Canadian life every 7 minutes, and for which 9 in 10 Saskatchewan people have at least one major risk factor.

This year, the Foundation is focusing on asking residents of Swift Current to take personal action as simple as cooking a heart-healthy meal, taking a daily walk or becoming smoke-free.

The Heart & Stroke Heart Rally will be held at the Pharmasave Meeting Room on Thursday, January 24 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Heart Rallies are fun, interactive and inspiring events where canvassers pick up their canvasser kits, learn tips on how to make their canvass a big success, and where members of the public can learn more about how to make healthy changes that will add healthy years to their lives.
‘We have ramped up the help we can provide to people of all ages, through our online tools that help you asses your personal risk for heart disease and stroke and learn how you can add healthy years to your life by making simple lifestyle changes,” says the Foundation’s Swift Current  Campaign Coordinator, Karla Rempel.  The Foundation’s website is www.heartandstroke.sk.ca
“During February, our person-to-person fundraising volunteers will be asking their friends and neighbours to support research and education aimed at giving Canadians longer, healthier lives,” she adds. “More than 100,000 volunteers will rally together across Canada to raise life-giving funds. Every donation – whether at the door, online, or through an event – is giving the people you care about a better chance to prevent or beat this disease.”
The Foundation has a large and dedicated base of volunteer canvassers who make the Foundation’s Door-to-Door campaign possible, however they are still in need of a few more people looking to make a difference, and who are willing to donate as little as one to three hours of their free time throughout February. You can sign up to volunteer as a canvasser at the Heart Rally, by contacting heartandstroke.ca/help or by calling 1-888-473-4636.
