The BMO Courtyard in downtown Swift Current will be the place to be May 25, as the local SPCA hosts its fourth Annual John Mueller Memorial Radiothon to support the animal shelter’s operations.

More than $74,000 has been raised for the shelter at the past three years’ events and the goal this year is $25,000.
“This is our biggest fundraising event of the year, with the proceeds from this event alone being enough to maintain our operations for about one month,” says SPCA President Susan McLaughlin.
The Radiothon hours will be 9:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. this year and it will be broadcast live on Magic 97.1 radio.
Pledges will be taken by phone at 306-778-SPCA (7722) and donations can be made on site at the event or online at: http://spcaswiftcurrent.com/make-a-donation. All donations of $10 or more are tax-receipted.
“The extended hours into the evening should give everyone a chance to stop in at some point during the day and we want it to be a fun event,” McLaughlin added.
Shelter pets will be on site to visit with in the afternoon and a pet photographer will be available to take pet photos for the 2018 SPCA calendar for $5 from 3-6:30 p.m.
Other activities during the day will include live entertainment at scheduled times during the day,  sparkle tattoos for children and concession options with fresh popcorn and drinks all day, a hot dog barbecue lunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. staffed by employees from Stark & Marsh Chartered Accountants and a pizza supper from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
SPCA spring raffle tickets will be on sale and the raffle draw takes place live at 6:15 p.m.
There will also be a great selection of books and puzzles from the SPCA Bookstore to shop plus some fun pet-themed giftware.
“Pets and pet welfare are important to many people and we are grateful for the support of people in the area in helping us continue to raise the funds we need each year to operate,” says McLaughlin.
The SPCA thanks premiere event sponsor Swift Current Building Supplies, and platinum sponsors Melhoff Electric, Wallace Construction/Winmar and Bridal Builders and all the other business sponsors who have come on board for the event, as well as Innovation Credit Union who has a large contingent of staff volunteering.
The Swift Current SPCA is a local volunteer-directed registered charity which receives no provincial or federal funding, is not affiliated with nor funded by the provincial SPCA, and which must raise 80 per cent of its $300,000 annual operating budget from the community each year. It serves approximately 300 domestic pets (cats and dogs) annually, providing round the clock shelter, food, and care with a high standard of health safety. It also provides required medical services including a spay/neuter program, foster and adoption services, pound care and fee collection services for the City of Swift Current, and a lost and found registry and microchipping program to help reunite strays with owners. The SPCA has operated animal shelter services in Swift Current since 1973.
