Radiothon is back again, broadcasting from the Cypress Regional Hospital Sept. 29-30. Once again the focus of Radiothon is making sure the major equipment needed by the hospital is available. This year, the focus is turning to the operating rooms.

First, a little information on the operating room suites at Cypress Regional Hospital. They are, in fact, the only two operating rooms in the region.
In an average year, there are approximately 2,000 surgeries performed in these two rooms. In fact, last year that number was 2,127. That is 3,286 hours of time the OR is being used. The types of surgeries being done include urology, general surgery, minor orthopedic, minor vascular, cataract, obstetrics and gynecology, ear nose and throat, and dental surgery. In total, there are currently seven surgeons who use the OR. These are busy rooms.
The equipment to be replaced is the operating tables themselves. These tables were identified by the Cypress Health Region as needing to be replaced, due to age and the fact they are wearing out. Both of the operating tables were in use in the old Swift Current Union Hospital and were moved into the Cypress Regional Hospital.
In their 11 years of use, they have seen a combined total of approximately 22,000 surgeries. As a result, understandably, they are wearing out.
The height adjustment controls no longer function as well as they used to, the battery backups don’t function properly, and wear and tear has made some of the extension pieces difficult to work with, not to mention the padding and cushioning are just worn out. New tables will improve conditions and in fact even safety for the operating staff and the patients.
One other piece of equipment it is hoped to be able to replace with the money gathered at Radiothon is a defibrillator for the operating rooms. This life-saving piece of equipment is an integral piece of operating room equipment. The current defibrillator has been in service for quite awhile and is due to be replaced as well.
What can you do to help?
